To the Girl who said Yes,
I believe that inside everyone one of us is a little box, a box which contains our deepest secrets, our greatest fears, our dreams and aspirations, as well as all of the things in this world we care about most. We often hide and protect this box, we shelter it away, lest the things inside be used to hurt us…When you said yes, you took a chance, I don’t want to ever diminish the significance of that moment. When you said yes, you said, I have this box, and I am going to slowly open it up and show you everything that is inside, even the things that I am worried will make you want to run away. I know, because I have the same box, filled with things that I am afraid will make you want to run, but it also contains those things which are most important to me, it contains my dreams, hopes, and desires, it now has you…I promise to protect you, though I might fail from time to time, I will do my best, and when I fall short of being the person you need me to be, I will work hard to catch up, to make right what I have made wrong, to honor you, to treat you with dignity, to respect you even when our opinions may vary, especially when our opinions vary, because in that moment I will have an opportunity to learn why you see the world differently than I do. I will trust you, to always tell the truth, to always mean what you say, even if it’s hard to say it, and to take care of my sensitive emotional self. I promise to listen to you, to your words, to your actions, to your heart, and to hear what you are saying. I promise to hold you, to hold your hand so you know I make a choice in every moment to be with you, to hold you close to me when we are together, to comfort you when you are weak, tired, scared, or upset. I promise to give you all of me, the good and the bad, because as flawed as I may be, I deserve to be happy just as much as you do. I will always encourage you to be the person you want to be, I will stand in your corner to cheer you on in your most difficult times. I promise to be honest and open with you, to tell you the things I don’t tell anyone else, to let you in, to illuminate the darkest parts of me, and to share the parts of me which shine. I will always fight fair, I will try to never raise my voice to you in anger, to always have the difficult conversations, to listen to your side with an open mind, and to promptly apologize when I realize I am wrong. While it may not be forever, I will cherish it as if it is…To the Girl who said Yes, thank you for taking a chance on me, and committing to us.
